How to Apply to be a Head or Assistant Coach

We actively encourage parents, former players, and non-parents to apply to coach in the CVHA and be part of our amazing volunteer family that makes the CVHA as great as it is for our players!  Please read through the material on the website, and reach out to the Head Convenor or VP's of House League if you have any questions (contacts may be found here).  If you aren't ready to be a Head Coach, we always need more Assistant Coaches, and it is a great way to get introduced to coaching (we need more Assistant Coaches than Head Coaches!). There are fantastic resources online, especially from Hockey Canada that provide drills and practice plans targeted to each age group, and we will be providing a Coach Resource page with support material, drills and tips. We are here to help you succeed on and off the ice as a coach!

The next step is as easy as filling out our
CVHA HL COACHING APPLICATION 2024-25 which is required. While there are certifications and requirements that must be met, we have an easy to follow guide online and we are always here to help with any questions you may have!

Factors in Coach Selection

House League (HL) Coaches and Assistant Coaches are appointed by the VP's of House League, as part of their duties is to determine all coaching assignments. Having previously coached in the CVHA does not guarantee a returning Coach a team assignment again. There are various factors the CVHA considers in determining coaching assignments. Factors such as the number of teams, number of coaches applied, and previous history. A big factor that is looked at is the prior history of the coach in adhering to the principles and guidelines of promoting fair play and sportsmanship, respect to players, parents, referees, CVHA officials and volunteers.  Some, or all of these factors will be taken into consideration.

Accepted as a Coach / Assistant Coach

All coaches who have been selected will be contacted by the CVHA once a decision has been made. This is usually done a month or so before the start of the season, but depending on various factors, this may be done up to the beginning of the season. Either a Division Convenor, Head Convenor, or one of the VP's of House League will contact you.

Once accepted, you will be registered by the CVHA with Hockey Canada so that we can ensure you meet all required qualifications and are properly insured.
