The City of Vaughan Hockey Associations governing body, the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL), announced yesterday that all sanctioned activities within its jurisdiction are postponed until at least January 1, 2021 pending further advice from health authorities.
The decision comes as a result of a rapid rise in the infection rate in the Greater Toronto Area and a statement from Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, Eileen de Villa, calling on the Provincial Government to prohibit indoor sports activities.
The GTHL had originally issued its Return to Play Game Plan, which was to begin on ice activities on October 7th. The plan was developed to align with Hockey Canada’s Safety Guidelines and the Ontario government’s COVID-19 Return to Sport Guidelines. The framework was formulated with the expert advice of medical professionals at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, as well as Toronto Public Health. The framework was to allow GTHL players back on the ice in a safe, fun, and secure environment while minimizing the risk of infection.
The CVHA Board and our many volunteers were working towards offering a safe and structured return to play program. Although the format was not the hockey as we know it, but it would have been an opportunity to keep the children on the ice, in a fun structured environment, with their safety being paramount. I would like to thank the CVHA Board and the many convenors, coaches, volunteers and front office staff, for the efforts to date, in trying to bring about a return to play.
The GTHL’s decision to postpone the hockey season until January, based on the most recent resurgence in COVID-19 cases within the GTA, is a decision supported by City of Vaughan Hockey Association, for the safe and well being of our participants, parents, coaches and volunteers. We are grateful for the commitment to our community hockey program, which to date, had 75% returning participants from our 2019/20 program, for which during these unprecedented times, is remarkable. We are hopeful for a safe Return to Play opportunity in January, for which we will be providing correspondence and updates to all of our CVHA members, regarding the return of Minor Hockey to Vaughan.
Our office staff will commence the reimbursement process this week, for all participants registered within the House League program. Please allow us a short window to figure this through. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact [email protected]
Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to our Community Minor Hockey Program.
Stay Safe, Stay Well.
